Ginsburg has surgery for early stages pancreatic cancer
February 06, 2009 -Los Angeles Times   
The fact that Ginsburg underwent surgery, however, is encouraging, said Dr. Gagandeep Singh, director of the Liver and Pancreas Center at John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica. Only 5% to 10% of pancreatic cancer patients have either Stage 1 or 2 cancer and qualify for surgery, he said. If the cancer has spread, then Ginsburg could undergo chemotherapy.

Pancreatic Cancer has become the 4th leading cause of cancer related death in the United States. Early diagnosis is essential.

The clinicians at John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center are addressing the challenge of detecting and treating pancreatic cancer through leading-edge clinical research, diagnostic modalities, chemotherapeutic options, and surgical interventions.

Gastrointestinal Research Program

The Gastrointestinal Program, led by Gagandeep Singh, M.D., focuses on a wide variety of tumors, including colon, rectal, pancreas, stomach, liver and esophagus cancers. In collaboration with the Department of Molecular Oncology, great strides have been made to further understand the molecular mechanisms important in gastrointestinal cancers growth and spread. This has been the result of national and international collaborative research cooperation between the Institute and other well-known cancer centers.  download PDF
